What’s The Deal With Cosmelan?

Cosmelan is the answer to dark spots and hyper pigmentation, especially on the face. These discolorations are an aesthetic concern that most of us are facing, as we age. Instead of covering your face with heavy make-up or foundation, return your skin to its natural tone. The Cosmelan depigmentation treatment, originally developed in Spain, is very effective. The treatment targets pigmentation and melasma to soften those areas and minimizes pores.

Cosmelan improves your skin tone in a noninvasive safe manner. The process provides amazing results that other treatments can’t replicate. It’s very effective for all types of melasma. The procedure is quick and easy. The product is compatible with all skin types. The light peeling effect rejuvenates and increases collagen in the skin. Treatments can start and be used all year round. As a bonus, it’s also effective for acne patients.

These are the Cosmelan steps, according to their website:

  1. The specially formulated pigment-reduction activating mask (Cosmelan I Mask) is applied to the skin and left on for 8-10 hours. This is in great part dependent upon the amount of pigmentation as well as your skin sensitivity levels This prolonged “wearing” of the mask is a key component in stimulating the fastest response. We will apply the Cosmelan I Mask at the office.
  2. Once the development and action time is complete, you may wash the mask off. The intensive action ingredients in Cosmelan include hydroquinone and retinoic acid. Hydroquinone will staunch the pigmentation cycle while retinoic acid encourages quick cell turnover. This helps you to more quickly shed brown patches and discoloration. The combination ingredients are an excellent combination which has been shown to provide a superior removal of old pigment and suppression of new pigment.
  3. Your At-Home Cosmelan Program will consist of active-ingredient products you will use on a consistent basis to further improve pigmentation problems and prevent excess pigment formation. Your maintenance cream, Cosmelan II, will be used on a ongoing basis. This special pigment control cream contains ingredients such as Kojic Acid, Phytic Acid, Ascorbic Acid and a protective agent, Titanium Dioxide.
  4. Cosmelan At Home Instructions: Active ingredients include hydroquinone, retinoic acid, azelaic acid, kojic acid, arbutine, phytic acid and ascorbic acid. The Cosmelan® Depigmentation action mechanism is based on the inhibition of tyrosinase, a basic enzyme responsible for the melanin formation process. Several of the substances present in the Cosmelan formula act by blocking this enzyme.

What To Expect

Within a week, patients will notice skin blemishes beginning to fade, and a brighter complexion is breaking through. After a couple weeks, the skin will take on a shiny, healthier glow. These results will continue to improve over the fourth or fifth week, when the full benefits of a Cosmelan Peel can be seen.
Patients who commit to a daily routine will see the smooth results from the Cosmelan Peel last for many months to come. The skin will be delicate and sensitive the first two weeks after treatment; prolonged sun exposure should be avoided and a full spectrum sunscreen should be worn at all times. We recommend the Sun-Shield Matte sunscreen, from Obagi.

According to our experience over the last 16 years at Neu look Med Spa, Cosmelan is the best for peel for high pigmentation and melasma. It corrects overproduction of Melanin and over powers the appearance of new dark spots. The dedication of the patient to the treatment plays a large role in overall lasting effects of Cosmelan. The product must be used as directed by Gita, our Nurse Practitioner, at Neu Look Med Spa and follow up visits must be scheduled to achieve the best lasting results.

How to Treat Crepey Skin

crepey skin radiesse sculptra

Does Your Skin Look Like Crepe Paper?

Is your skin starting to look thin and wrinkled? And maybe similar to crepe paper? Crepey skin can result from aging, lack of moisture, excessive weight loss and exposure to the sun. Collagen and elastin, in our skin, keep our skin tight and wrinkle-free. But the ultraviolet light in the sun’s rays break down the collagen and elastin in our skin. However, don’t fret, there is a solution to this!

Treatments for Crepey Skin

You can use Sculptra and Radiesse fillers in areas you have crepey skin. These fillers can be injected in your neck, knees, butt, arms, face, and almost any other body part you can think of. Radiesse/ Scultpra are fillers used to plump wrinkled skin or folded areas of the skin, like crepey skin. After it is injected, Radiesse/ Sculptra stimulate your natural collagen growth. This is why your immediate results, post injection, will only improve. Our Nurse Practitioner, Gita Izadi, recommends getting 2-3 Radiesse/ Sculptra treatments that are 4-6 weeks apart. This is to ensure the best results! The injectable is known to last 9-15 months but can even last up to two years when you get the correct dosage. Sculptra has been known to last up to 2-3 years depending on how many treatments your receive. Peak results for Scultpra are after the second treatment. As Gita puts it, the filler needs to be layered in order to stimulate more collagen. Radiesse/ Sculptra both work to restore facial volume and soften wrinkles and folds over time.

Radiesse/ Scultpra are both great products that stimulate collagen production and work to add volume to the areas they are injected. When you come in for a consultation, Gita will go ahead tell you which one is better for your desired results. She can also help you figure out a treatment plan that is best for you! I have seen her use Scultpra countless times for the face and chest. And I have seen her use Radiesse for hands, arms, and the neck. But these two fillers can be used interchangeably. There’s just some differences in their molecular structures.

As stated on their company website,

“Radiesse is comprised of CaHA, calcium hydroxylapatite, microspheres suspended in an aqueous gel carrier.”

Once it is injected, Radiesse provides immediate volume and boosts the body’s natural production of collagen, for a long-lasting effect. The CaHA gel microspheres are then absorbed by the body, leaving the collagen that your body has produced. With Sculptra, it is a similar process except with PLLA which is poly-L-lactic acid, collagen stimulator. That’s why your metabolism is a huge factor in how long Radiesse lasts for you. Once the microspheres are metabolized, your collagen production will no longer be stimulated. So, if you’ve heard people claiming Radiesse isn’t lasting for them, it’s due to their body and metabolism. Fillers work differently for everyone so don’t let one person’s experience keep you from getting it done!

Jane Iredale, A Full Coverage Makeup Line That’s Good For Your Skin

Jane Iredale Makeup Neu Look Med Spa and Skin Center San Diego CA

About Jane Iredale

Jane Iredale was started by a former casting producer and director who realized how much people in the entertainment industry rely on makeup. However, she saw models and actors, and actresses using products that were horrible for their skin. They wanted full coverage but they were using any product to do so. It would result in them breaking out from the makeup they were using. She had an epiphany one night and wanted to create makeup that was good for the consumer’s skin. And from there Jane Iredale was born. A full coverage makeup line that is good for your skin, which is why Jane Iredale is promoted by plastic surgeons and sold in our medical facility.

Jane Iredale is mineral based, and from personal use I can say that I have never broken out from it. Other makeup brands tend to include chemicals, oils, and other ingredients that will cause your skin to deteriorate with their use. However, Jane Iredale will help you cover any blemishes you have and protect you with SPF. Their pressed and loose powder foundations are the only powder foundations I have ever used. I can attest that in high school I had horrible acne and they helped me cover them up seamlessly. The Jane Iredale powder foundations also have SPF in them which protected me from the sun and prevented me from getting sun damage.

What Kind of Products Does Jane Iredale Offer?

Jane Iredale has all the makeup you could want. This includes, BB cream, which is a liquid foundation, powder foundation, lip sticks, mascara, eyeshadow, eyebrow kits, setting spray, etc. The best thing about their products is you do not have to worry about them having a negative effect on your skin. Just find your foundation match, favorite shade of eyeshadow or lip stick and don’t worry. Jane Iredale also offers bronzer, blushes, contouring kits, and concealer which is perfect for our medical spa. We use it on patients when they get an injection and become bruised. It provides full coverage and they know they’re safe from chemicals and the sun due to a lot of Jane Iredale products having SPF in them.

Other Brands Vs. Jane Iredale

The reason that other brands are not good for your skin or health is because a lot of their products include parabens, which are man-made chemicals, carcinogens, which cause cancer, and excess fragrance. If you actually look at the ingredients and see a lot of words that sounds like chemicals or are things you have never heard of before, then chances are it’s horrible for your skin. They add a lot of these to their formulas to make them last longer. But they can impact the oil and bacteria on your face, and some can even impact your hormones and internal health. It’s important to keep in mind that the makeup you put on your face seeps into your skin and can cause internal issues. Unlike other famous brands, Jane Iredale received a score of 2, on ewg.org/skindeep for their low hazard makeup.

Conclusion

When buying new makeup products be sure to look into their ingredients and make sure they are good for your skin and body. I understand wanting to cover up blemishes but not at the expensive of actually worsening the appearance of your skin and health. Choose Jane Iredale for a stress free decision! Come in today and let us help you find your favorite new products!

My Journey with Acne and Skin Treatments

My Acne Journey

My skin journey has been a long one filled with various products, skin treatments, medications, and lifestyle changes. I know the dream answer to managing your acne would be one thing. Like there is this one product that will change everything or cutting one thing from your diet would fix it but it takes more than that. Acne is a more aggressive issue than that. I have had acne since I was about 12 years old. Growing up I knew that acne was genetic but now that I have gotten older I know that besides that the biggest cause of acne is your hormones. The most important thing to managing and getting rid of acne is being consistent AND never picking at them and turning them into acne scars.

Personally, I use the Obagi Clenziderm System which is for acne prone and oily skin. With oily skin, you want to use products that will dry out the excess oil like salicylic acid, retinoic acid, and benzoyl peroxide. Salicylic acid and retinoic acid work to unclog pores, retinoic acid also works to prevent breakouts and minimize acne and acne scars, and benzoyl peroxide works to eliminate the acne-causing bacteria. But remember, you will need a moisturizer to go along with these products. Even though salicylic acid, retinoic acid, and benzoyl peroxide are good to rid your skin on the excess oil and bacteria, they will dry out your skin. That’s why you absolutely MUST buy a good moisturizer. I would recommend either Skin Medica’s Ultra Sheer Moisturizer or Obagi’s Hydrate Luxe. Moisturizing will add the hydration back to your skin. Otherwise, when your skin dries out it will try to overcompensate, produce more oil, and result in you breaking out. The key is finding the balance between drying out the bacteria and acne but not too much so your body has to over compensate.

Favorite Treatments

Along with a great home regimen, consistent treatments such as peels, Microneedling, Dermaplanning, and acne-cortisone shots will be helpful. Microneedling and Fractional will also be effective for acne scars. Our Skin Medica Vitalize and Rejuvenize peels along with the Dermaplanning will help rid your face of the dead layer of skin, on your face. They will also help your skin develop new healthier cells. The Rejuvenize is a deeper peel that we recommend for people that have more acne and acne scars. It is more effective for tougher skin because it penetrates deeper in your skin. With the acne-cortisone shots, they are usually for huge individual zits. Our nurse practitioner will inject a diluted corticosteroid into the zit and it will start to deflate within a few hours. Like we’ve mentioned in our other blogs Microneedling and Fractional both work to resurface the texture of your skin. Microneedling will use microscopic needles to scratch the surface of your skin to promote more collagen production and soften the surface of your skin. With fractional, it is a laser that penetrates deeper into the skin and has a longer down-time than the Microneedling. Both treatments require a consistent home regimen to see the best results.

Don’t Forget About Proper Nutrition!

Last but certainly not least, a key aspect of minimized acne is the foods you eat and put into your body. Everybody’s body is different so if you really struggle with cystic and hormonal acne I would talk to a dermatologist or endocrinologist about the foods you should and should not consume. For me personally, I need to stay away from sugar and dairy but everyone is different. Everyone’s body and skin is different so try different treatments and products and see which combinations work for you!

PRP Microneedling

PRP Microneedling San Diego with Gita Izadi at Neu Look Med Spa and Skin Center in San Diego, CA

Prior to getting this treatment I had no idea what I was in for. But I can honestly say this is my favorite way to get Microneedling. PRP stands for platelet-rich-plasma. So, rather than using the Microneedling gel for the treatment, the provider will use your plasma. The way that this works is with a centrifuge machine, that essentially spins your blood and separates your plasma from the blood. The benefits of using PRP rather than Microneedling gel is the healing process and injections. PRP speeds up the healing process of Microneedling. Therefore, rather than being red for 5-7 days it should really only last 3-5 days. This makes the treatment more convenient and obtainable because you don’t have to worry about the healing process. Plus, you can use a mineral-based powder, like Jane Iredale, the day after your treatment to cover up the redness. We recommend Jane Iredale because we know it is safe for your skin, and with my experience it has really good coverage! By the second and third day you couldn’t see any redness which was convenient because I had errands to run.

How Microneedling Works

The step by step of how the PRP Microneedling treatment works is getting numbed an hour prior to your treatment, to lessen the pain of the treatment. For me, when my face is numb, the Microneedling feels like a massage and I really enjoy it. The first step in the actual PRP treatment is drawing some of your blood. Then the provider will put the tube in a centrifuge machine which will spin the blood to obtain the PRP. When you look at the tube you will be able to see the separation. Platelets will range in color from yellow to orange. Prior to the PRP treatment, I looked up a video to see what it was like and their patient’s platelets were yellow. When I was getting my treatment done, and my platelets were orange I was a little concerned. But this is nothing to worry about. After the PRP is prepared, the provider will place the PRP onto your skin and proceed with the Microneedling treatment. You can even get injections of the PRP into your acne scars or indentations in your skin. If you have ever gotten a Microneedling treatment then you know how much of a difference it makes to the surface of your skin. Then adding the component of PRP improves the cell turnover because the provider is using a component of your body. So, not only does the PRP ease the healing process it will actually create improved results.

Microneedling: Post Treatment

Post treatment, the texture of my skin has dramatically changed. The day of the treatment I was extremely red but honestly by the second day it reduced by 50%. Compared to the last time I got Microneedling, without the PRP, I’d say the healing process was way faster and more convenient. I didn’t have to worry about not going outside or looking strange. The day after I was able to apply my Jane Iredale foundation and go out in public and no one could tell I got anything. After the third and fourth day I didn’t even apply foundation because it look like a very faint sunburn. Gita saw me the next week and was absolutely astonished with my skin. She touched it and said it felt like a baby’s skin. The appearance of my acne scars also improved but like she told me prior to the treatment, nothing will truly make them go away. But I can’t wait to do another PRP treatment to soften my acne scars and resurface my skin again! I would recommend it to everyone and anyone!
