Here at Neu Look Med Spa we see a lot of patients who are self conscious of their acne scars. The patients acne may be under control but they are constantly reminded of the past breakouts that they battled in the form of discoloration, uneven texture, and pitted scars.
Thankfully there are a variety of options to help reduce and possibly eliminate the look of these scars. The first step is to consult with our Nurse Practitioner Gita Izadi to properly access your skin and the severity of the scarring.
The most common acne scars/ marks we see at Neu Look Med Spa, are Brown spots that belong to a category called Post Inflammatory Hyperpigmentation.
According to Medscape.com “This acquired excess of pigment can be attributed to various preceding disease processes that affect the skin such as infections, allergic reactions, acne, mechanical injuries, reactions to medications, phototoxic eruptions, trauma (burns), and inflammatory diseases”. Post inflammatory hyperpigmentation tends to fade with time and therapy. Remnants of epidermal hyperpigmentation may persist for indefinite periods, typically 6-12 months, after the initial inflammatory process resolves.”

How to Treat Acne Scars
Post Inflammatory Hyperpigmentation is not true scarring and can usually be improved with a topical treatment such as Hydroquinone. Hydroquinone blocks the enzyme in your skin that produces melanin, and the results are that your spots fade and the skin has an even tone. Patients can use Hydroquinone in conjunction with Retin-A for 3 months with a good sunscreen can eliminate the hyperpigmentation.
If you suffered from severe cystic acne, you may have “rolling” scars. According to livestrong.com “Rolling acne scars occur when bands of tissue develop in deeper structures of the skin’s surface and between the surfaces of the skin. The bands pull at the skin, creating a visible “rolling” effect. These scars can also become more noticeable as we age.”One of the most effective treatments for this is the 1540 Fractional Laser. This treatment smoothes the scar ridges and encourages collagen growth under the scars. A series of 3-5 treatments spaced about 6-8 weeks apart will give patients the best results. You can experience redness, swelling, dryness and puffiness after and this can last anywhere from 3 days to one week. But you can look forward to smoother and firmer skin when completing your series of treatments. Please visit www.neulookskin.com.
Mixto- Fractional laser is another technology that can smooth and treat acne scars. The recovery for this treatment is longer than 1540- Non/Ablative, but the result is quicker and more noticeable. Book a Free consultation at Neu Look Med Spa and Skin Center.
