Can I use OBAGI Nu Derm During the Summer?

Can you safely use tretinoin and hydroquinone during the summer?

Many patients at Neu Look Medical Spa are hooked on using the Nu- Derm skincare system by OBAGI Medical. A common question that arises as summer approaches is, “Can I safely use tretinoin and hydroquinone during the summer?” and the answer is yes! That not only applies to using the Nu- Derm system, but all other medical grade tretinoin and hydroquinone as well.

Obagi Nu-Derm Backed By Science

Suzan Obagi, MD, Associate Professor of Dermatology and Associate Professor of Plastic Surgery, Director, UPMC Cosmetic Surgery and Skin Health Center University of Pittsburgh Medical Center states: “Many patients ask if they should take a break from using their skincare products during the summer months. This stems from concerns with sun exposure and increased outdoor activities. However, I have oftentimes found that patients that need the Nu-Derm product line most are those with pigmentation issues such as melasma or post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation. These are conditions that typically flare and worsen during hot, sunny weather. In order for patients to have adequate control over these conditions, I recommend that they continue to use their Nu-Derm products as instructed. This goes hand in hand with sun avoidance during the peak hours of 10 am to 2 pm, wearing a hat when outdoors, and reapplying their sunscreen after sweating, swimming, or every 2 hours while outdoors. Furthermore, while ultraviolet ray B (UVB, the burning ray) increases during the summer, UVA (the aging ray) remains constant all year. Therefore it is imperative to use a daily, broad-spectrum sunscreen such as Obagi Sun Shield, either tinted or untinted, daily. I recommend it even while driving or working under fluorescent lights, as these are sources of ultraviolet light exposure that most patients do not realize.”

Helene Geigelman ,CHC, from Rizzier Medical Spa joins into the conversation adding, “In addition to using a sunscreen, incorporate a topical antioxidant into your morning skin care routine. Antioxidants help in the fight against free radical and sun damage. They help stabilize collagen, which helps reduce the aging effects the sun inflicts on our skin. Vitamin C in the form of L-ascorbic acid is believed by many experts to be the most stable and effective in protecting skin. Obagi Medical offers a full portfolio of vitamin C (l-ascorbic acid) products: Pro C formulas 10%, 15% and 20% as well as Pro C Peptide Serum, C Exfoliating Day Lotion and Pro C Suncare SPF 30, all of which contain vitamin C. Apply a few drops, first thing in the morning, after cleansing and toning.”

Stick To a Prescribed Skincare System

In conclusion, not using your Nu- Derm system may indeed leave you vulnerable to get additional photo damage that will need to be treated as well. The best way to take care of your skin and complexion all-year-round would be to stick to your prescribed medical grade skincare system that is recommended by your personal medical facility or medical spa, such as Neu Look. You want to protect your texture, complexion and all of the other important skin concerns as well – not just worry about hyperpigmentation.

Dermal Fillers: A Less is More Approach!

less is more neu look medical spa dermal fillers

Our Dermal Filler Philosophy

At Neu Look Medical Spa located in San Diego, CA, we pride ourselves on the knowledge we share with our patients regarding aesthetic treatments such as Dermal Filler, Botox and Laser. Gita Izadi, an experienced Nurse Practitioner, provides her patients with a “less is more” approach to ensure that the results of a treatment are natural. Although one syringe of filler is a very small amount (1/4 of a teaspoon), it is better to slowly correct than to overfill.

Neurotoxins

Dr. Kelly Vasileiadou, a plastic surgeon, states, “As cosmetic surgeons have grown more sophisticated in their methods and the array of fillers and neurotoxins has become more diverse and specialized, patently obvious nonsurgical work is becoming the exception rather than the rule. A good aesthetic doctor now recognizes that the most natural-looking effects are achieved incrementally, with tiny, almost imperceptible adjustments”. She continues explaining, “When I talk to my patients, I’m actually analyzing their facial expressions, harmony and beauty. I draw out a master plan with each patient, using a face-analysis tool on a photo of the patient. We start with baby steps and give touch-ups until we’ve achieved a uniquely personalized map of what and where to inject. A good facial surgeon does not need tons of material to achieve an impressive tightening of the skin, even at a 75-year-old patient. Why? Because she or he knows exactly where to inject it. A good doctor injects between the right ligaments of the face, that will keep the fillers stable and not diffuse them. He or she respects the natural anatomy of the person and aims to enhance and not change the one’s features.”

Less Is More

Dr. Sophie Shotter, the Medical director of a Skin & Wellness Clinic, states, “Our mantra is less is more and we believe that being conservative with products and then topping up if necessary later on is the best course of action and will give you a natural, refreshed look as opposed to the highly publicized trout pout and pillow cheeks that we see so much in the media nowadays. Dermal fillers are there to help you look naturally more youthful, and Dr Sophie is an expert in using minimal product for maximum effect.”

Dr. Darla Liotta, Plastic Surgeon, also agrees with Neu Look Medical Spa’s “less is more” policy. She states on her blog that, “My philosophy of beauty is that “less is more.” My goal is to optimize your natural beauty, and to achieve an apparently effortless, simple and timeless beauty that preserves the face as a fresh, clean palate.” She continues with, “The best plastic surgery is plastic surgery you can’t see. I often have patients who say, “when I walk down the street I can tell when someone has had filler, or a facelift.” Well done Botox, filler, peels, or even surgery should leave you guessing why your neighbor looks so well-rested, or why your college friend has looked the same for the last 15 years.

Quality Over Quantity

These physicians are only a few of many who agree that the injector is more important than the quantity of product in some cases. Gita Izadi, NP offers complimentary consultations where she will take time to address your concerns as well as give her suggestions. You will never feel pushed or pressured into a procedure at Neu Look Med Spa. Gita believes in respecting a patients features and providing enhancements that leave a patient looking refreshed and not overdone. If you start small, you will get big results. Benefits of Laser Hair Reduction (aka “Removal”)

Laser Hair Removal at Neu Look Med Spa in San Diego

The Struggle is Real

At Neu Look Medical Spa in San Diego, California, we consider it summertime year-round. With almost perfect weather for shorts all year , your skin always needs to be ready! We offer all of the treatment essentials such as spray tanning, IPL Laser (for red and brown discolorations) and most importantly Laser Hair Reduction or “Removal”. Every female knows the struggle of always trying to achieve smooth skin with the results ending in stubble, razor bumps, and ingrown hairs . Men can also struggle with folliculitis (white or red pimple like dots surrounding the hair follicle) and ingrown hairs that can potentially cause scaring on their face, typically in their beard area.

Laser Hair Removal Vs. Waxing

Some people get waxed regularly, which is much less time consuming than shaving. Waxing is an effective method of hair removal for most people but it can be expensive in the long run. Many people experience skin irritation that can be itchy, unsightly and painful for days after their service. It is also common for ingrown hairs to form under the skin, especially if the client has thick or course hair.

If you are hoping to find a treatment that is a worthwhile investment, Laser Hair Reduction (Removal) is a wise choice. Our Nurse Practitioner, Gita Izadi, will use the Lumenis (Light Sheer Desire) Laser to quickly treat the hair that is in the anagen stage (growing phase). Multiple treatments will be required to achieve the best possible result as we are trying to eliminate all the hair growth cycles. On average, 5-7 treatments that are between 4-6 weeks apart are needed for optimal results. Laser Hair Reduction has been FDA approved to last a minimum of 2-4 years with patients needing occasional touchups. Some treatment areas, such as lip or underarms, can even be completed in less than 10 minutes.

Preparation

To prepare for this treatment you need to shave the area that that will be lasered. It is important to not tan for 7 to 10 days before (or after) treatment, this includes Spray Tanning. Immediately after treatment, you can expect a mild sunburn-like sensation, possibly accompanied by some minor swelling. This usually lasts 2-24 hours, and can be soothed with cold gel or ice packs. The treated hair will continue to appear 7-30 days post-treatment. This is not new hair growth, but the treated hairs being expelled from the skin. In some cases you may experience Folliculitis or slight inflammation of the hair follicles, if this occurs you can call Neu Look Medical Spa for advice on how you should treat that area.

How to Heal Bruises From Injectables Quicker

How to Help Prevent Bruising - Neu Look Med Spa & Skin Center in San Diego, CA

At Neu Look Medical Spa in San Diego, CA, we understand the importance of privacy and the possibility that many of our patients do not share their cosmetic procedures with their peers. We pride ourselves on being knowledgeable about how much downtime is usually required per treatment to allow our patients to plan accordingly with the exception of one side effect: bruising. This is the only side effect that cannot be predicted prior to a treatment and the length and depth of the bruise cannot be pre- determined. There are so many blood vessels that cannot be seen by the naked eye in the body, especially in the face and neck area. Unfortunately, many people fear getting treated because of the possibility of bruising.

How to Heal Bruises Quicker

Although we cannot promise you will not be bruised, there are ways to heal the bruise quicker and more efficiently. The IPL Machine, or Photofacial Laser, can be used to minimize the appearance of a bruise within a few days or even help it to heal faster. You may recognize the name of this laser because it is typically used for broken capillaries, sun damage or other blemishes. Another way to reduce the longevity and discomfort of a bruise is to use warm compresses the day after the treatment or to simply allow the warm water to run over your face in the shower. Warmth helps the blood to flow and distribute away from the area versus having a cold compress promote clotting. We often suggest our patients begin taking oral tablets of Arnica or applying a topical Arnica cream the night before the treatment. This homeopathic remedy can be used for various purposes such as swelling, bruising, muscle pain, insect bites and more. We also suggest that patients hold off on using blood thinning medications a couple of days before their treatment or the soonest possible before receiving their injection for prevention purposes. We also advise you to not consume alcohol the day prior to your treatment or the day of your treatment.

Helpful Tips

Gita Izadi, Nurse Practitioner, can typically see a bruise forming almost immediately after the pinpoint injection. It is important to apply mild pressure quickly to prevent the spreading and depth of the bruise. The staff at Neu Look Med Spa try our best to keep the facility a low-stress environment that is inviting and comforting to our patients. We try to educate our patients to think positive thoughts before and during a treatment to not “invite” negative results, such as a bruise. High blood pressure, stress and anxiety can increase your chances of bruising. I am sure you have heard the phrase, “you can think something into existence”. It is also a fact that your genetics play the largest part in whether or not you will bruise. Everyone’s body has a different way of processing trauma, even if it is mild. This being said, Neu Look Med Spa wants to encourage positivity and to not allow one side effect to discourage you from getting treatments. Bruises are natural and typically resolve on their own in less than two weeks. It’s a small price to pay for the happiness you will experience long term from your results. Think of the bigger picture and enjoy the process.

Am I Too Young to Start Cosmetic Injections?

how young is too young for injections?

Legality of Treatments

Let’s face it, social media, and celebrities are making a huge impact on the upcoming generation of young adults. Young adults and teenagers are witnessing a whole new world of anti-wrinkle, lip and cheek injections becoming the new “norm”. Many individuals view cosmetic procedures as a way of self-expression. It is also to be noted that neither Botox nor any filler injection is permanent. However it is a medically prescribed treatment and should not be taken lightly. At Neu Look Med Spa & Skin Center, in San Diego, legally, you qualify for any treatment at the age 18 years of age, with a consultation. But that doesn’t guarantee you will receive every treatment you desire, because at a young age, your body and face are still developing.

Uniqueness of Treatments

At Neu Look Med Spa & Skin Center, we know that each patient is unique and some treatments are specifically to correct an asymmetry, imbalance or deformity to avoid surgery. Other patients want to achieve a specific appearance that they see themselves as in their mind. Some people believe that waiting until you are older is better due to your advanced physical and emotional maturity. There are some practitioners who say as long as you are over the age of 18 or past your later teen growth spurts that there is no reason to not receive Botox or Filler. Other providers state that it shouldn’t be started until someone is in their mid-to-late 20’s or 30 years of age. The general consensus between disagreeing parties is that it is all depending on what the younger patient wishes to achieve and why.

Fillers and Skin Damage

According to Coco Ruby Skin and Anti-Ageing Cosmetic Blog, “What the Kardashians are doing cosmetically might not suit your face or your lips. Plus, chances are that the younger you are when you first start getting cosmetic injections; the more likely it is that you might regret it over time. Just like those colorful tattoos you’re considering investing in (or already have).” Our NP Gita, at Neu Look Med Spa & Skin Center, states that fillers will only stretch your skin or damage your appearance, long term, if it is injected incorrectly. “There is no treatment that I offer at my facility that is 100% permanent and I provide my patients with a thorough consultation before I make any decisions on treating them. I do not over treat anyone, to benefit financially, and I always do what is best for that unique individual based on their desires and my professional advice.

Botox and Dysport

Botox and Dysport are injected for many reasons such as anti-wrinkling, hyperhydrosis, headaches and more. Botox is manufactured by Allergan and Dysport is manufactured by Galderma. They are both Botulinum products. They essentially do the same thing except their molecular makeup is different. One unit of Botox is equivalent to three units of Dysport. Therefore, don’t think that you’ll need the same dosage. Our NP, Gita Izadi, likes to use Botox and Dysport for different areas of the face. It also depends on the patients and whether they prefer Botox or Dysport. They are both used to soften lines our patients develop on their faces.

Fine lines and wrinkles on your face have multiple causes. Many fine lines and wrinkles are from expressions we make on a daily basis but they are largely from genetics. “Everyone’s skin retains lines differently. Therefore, one patient may start developing deep set lines, that can be softened with Botox or Dysport, at the age of 30 and another patient may start forming a deep set line at the age of 22. The goal of Botox or Dysport is to prevent deep set lines that will need to be filled eventually. It is not bad to be cautious and proactive with your face,” Gita states. Meaning, if you feel as though you have lines that you want to be corrected, don’t avoid coming in to see our NP, Gita. Come in for a complimentary consultation and discuss your concerns with her.

Quality Over Pricing

At Neu Look Med Spa & Skin Center, we suggest that at ANY age, when receiving ANY treatment, to choose QUALITY over pricing. With injections, you often get what you pay for. Sacrificing professionalism and experience for lower pricing is never a good idea. Cheaper practitioners and facilities are often guilty of diluting their product, injecting lesser quality fillers, or non-approved substances. Anyone can be at risk for a poor injection but many unprofessional facilities prey on younger potential patients using social media as a tool. Please do not fall prey to these practices.

Call Neu Look Med Spa & Skin Center, at 858-538-5665. We’ll be glad to offer further information or advice on this topic. You can also email info@neulookskin.com to schedule your complimentary consultation or appointment.

6 Easy Tips to Stop Yourself from Picking Your Skin

6 Easy Tips to Stop Yourself from Picking Your Skin

Many people have the habit of picking their skin, and working at Neu Look gave us the experience all those people and witness the consequence of their behavior.  At Neu Look Med Spa we treat all types of acne and other skin conditions. We have a large variety of skin treatments that target anything from cystic acne to hyperpigmentaiton. In 2019 we are putting a focus on educating our current and new patients about skin health and how to prevent further impurities.

According to Psychology Today, “Excoriation disorder, or compulsive skin picking, dermatillomania is a psychological condition that manifests in the form of repetitive touching, scratchingpicking, and digging at one’s own skin.” We are all guilty of this compulsive action at some point or another, but unfortunately it may cause deep scaring that will be difficult and expensive to correct many years later. Medical News Today warns us against crater scaring in an article explaining, “Pockmarks are deep scars on the skin that do not usually go away on their own. They are often caused by severe acne but can also be the result of skin infections or chickenpox.” In some cases scaring is inevitable but in most, the majority can be prevented by simply using the correct skin regimen proscribed by your provider and keeping your hands off your face!

Another factor in scaring is your skin type according to the Fitzpatrick Scale. It is a way to estimate how your skin tone or type can tolerate sun exposure and trauma. It is proven that darker skin tones (types 3-6) are more prone to a darkening of pigment rather than lighter skin tones (types 1-2) due to the excess of melanin in the skin. That being said, it is harder to safely laser skin types 3-6 if scaring occurs which limits your treatment options. The laser concentrates on darker pigmentation so the laser can focus on the blemish directly on people with a lighter skin tone. Gita (NP) at Neu Look Med Spa can always meet with you for a consultation to distinguish if your skin can be “prepped” with a brightening agent before your laser appointment if you are a darker skin type.

If you are a “picker” it is never too late to stop! Here are some tips on how to distract yourself from touching or picking a blemish:

  • Do not over-examine yourself in the mirror and do not use the extra strength mirrors that show every impurity. If you cannot see it with the naked eye, neither can anyone else!
  • If you catch yourself touching a blemish, stop immediately.
  • If you feel as if you need to touch your face, if possible, try to cleanse or moisturize! Make it a productive touch instead or a harmful one.
  • Have a friend or family member that you can tell when you feel the urge to hold you accountable whether it is with a phone call or in person.
  • Keep a sticky note that says “Do not pick” on your mirror to remind you. It sounds silly but it works.
  • Get regular skin treatments to improve your skin so there will not be as many impurities to tempt you!

Call Neu Look Med Spa at 858-538-5665 to ask about our free consultations or schedule one today. We also respond to emails at info@neulookskin.com to assist you.
