They are often referred to as physical blockers”according to Renee Rouleau, Celebrity Esthetician. The pros of using physical blockers include less irritation to sensitive skin types, are effective as soon as applied to the skin, less likely to clog pores, provide protection from both UVA and UVB rays, and they have a longer shelf life.* If you have melasma or rosacea which are both skin conditions aggravated by heat , a physical sunscreen is your best solution as it deflects heat and rays off of the skin.
Chemical sunscreens” contain organic (carbon-based) compounds, such as oxybenzone, octinoxate, octisalate and avobenzone, which create a chemical reaction and work by changing UV rays into heat, then releasing that heat from the skin. They are often referred to as chemical or organic absorbers” Renee Rouleau explains.The pros of using a chemical sunscreen are that they tend to be a thinner, more lightweight formula and it is easier to add other beneficial skin care ingredients to these formulas. Unfortunately due to this lightweight formula, Chemical Sunscreens need to be applied more frequently and you must apply them at least 20 minutes before you are exposed to the sun.
