How to Use Sunscreen (The Right Way)

How to Use Sunscreen The Right Way by Neu Look Med Spa and Skin Center

The Importance of Using Sunscreen Properly

The popularity of sunscreen is becoming evidently more apparent as people are seeing the effects of sun damage and skin cancer from their younger years. Nurse Practitioner Gita Izadi at Neu Look Med Spa is very adamant about the education of protecting skin from the harmful UVA and UVB rays. We offer many different treatment options such as laser treatments and chemical peels but prevention is the best method for keeping an even complexion.

A healthy skincare routine involves the appropriate cleaner for your skin, toner or astringent, serum, eye cream and moisturizer along with a weekly exfoliant. As we age we add in retinol which is one of the most incredible skincare discoveries in history but only if used correctly with a good moisturizer and sunscreen. Retinol makes you more subjectable to sunlight due to the deep exfoliation it provides. To get maximize the anti-aging results of any retinol, you need sunscreen to combat the sun damage that can occur from exposure. All skin types and tones are at risk for damage and skin cancer.

Obagi’s Sun Shield

At Neu Look Med Spa we retail a product by OBAGI called Sun Shield that does exactly what the name suggests. This is a daily sunscreen that is great for both men and women with an SPF of 50. It is hydrating without being heavy and wears perfectly under make-up. It has a Zinc Oxide concentrate of 10.5% and Octinoxate percentage of 7.5% along with other active ingredients that prevent damage. OBAGI states, “this sunscreen combines UVB absorption and UVA protection in an elegant, matte finish that is non-comedogenic, hypoallergenic, non-acnegenic, and dermatologist tested.” The Skin and Cancer Foundation approved this sunscreen as an effective broad spectrum protection.

SkinCeuticals Sunscreen

SkinCeuticals is another common brand that is known for their medical grade sunscreen and sold at Neu Look Med Spa. Physical Fusion UV Defense has an SPF of 50 and is water and sweat resistant. It also has UVA/UVB protective fluid to enhance your natural skin tone while remaining paraben and chemical free. It has a percentage of 5% Zinc Oxide and 6% Titanium Dioxide. This sunscreen can be used daily and is also perfect for all ages and gender neutral. It also wears perfectly under make-up for women.

Sunscreen Mineral Powers by Colorscience

If a liquid sunscreen is something you cannot get used to using every day, we at Neu look Med Spa and Skin also retail sunscreen mineral powers by Colorescience. With an SPF of 50 these powders come in a brush on container or a compact for convenience. You will get just as much protection and these are perfect for reapplying over make-up throughout the day – which is suggested for maximum protection against the UVA and UVB rays. This hypoallergenic powder contains 22.5% Titanium Dioxide and 22.5% Zinc Oxide. There are many options for sunscreen so you should always be protected.

Revision Skin Care’s Intellishade Sunscreen

Another line that we retail at Neu look is Revision skin care. Revision has Intellishade original and Matte which is an anti-aging tinted daily moisturizer. The Itellishade has SPF 45, UVA and UVB protection.

How to use sunscreen and tips:

  • Apply sunscreen in the morning as the last step in your skincare routine.
  • Try to apply your SPF at least 15 minutes before exposure to ensure it has had time to penetrate into your skin.
  • Re-apply throughout the day if you are not wearing make-up, and if you are wearing the make up use the Colorscience powder.
  • For Make Up Select Jane Iradale Poweders that has SPF for extra protection.

Skinmedica Vitalize Peel vs Rejuvenize Peel vs Perfect Peel

neulook Vitalize Peel San Diego
chemical peel

Well, first things first…what exactly do peels do and who can benefit from them?

Professional chemical peels help to improve the skin imperfections that result from skin aging and sun exposure by accelerating skin exfoliation through chemical substances, resulting in renewed and healthier looking skin. They address issues such as fine lines and wrinkles, uneven skin tone and texture, acne scarring, and pigment changes.

Three different peels…Which one is right for me?

  1. Skin MedicaVitalize Peel

The Vitalize Peel is appropriate for mild-moderate skin imperfections. It’s also ok for any skin type. Containing retinol and salicylic/lactic acids, this peel can be done every 3-4 weeks and is the most gentle of the three types.

  1. Skin Medica Rejuvenize Peel

The Rejuvenize Peel is ideal for moderate to severe skin imperfections. Precautions are taken with patients who have darker skin types. This peel contains retinol and salicylic/mandelic/malic/phytic acids. Multiple treatments spaced out every 4-6 weeks is preferred.

  1. The Perfect Derma Peel

The Perfect Peel is a medium depth peel that contains TCA, retinoic/salicylic/kojic acid, and glutathione (a powerful antioxidant which lightens and brightens the skin, slows down the aging process, and helps prevent wrinkles). This peel is safe for all skin types and includes 2 additional peel pads to use the day after the treatment (am/pm). This peel has the most “peeling” effect of the three types of peels, usually around day 3. Treatments should be spaced out every 6 weeks.

Before a chemical peel, it’s important to avoid any skin products containing retinol, salicylic/glycolic acids, or prescription topicals. With any peel, it’s normal to experience tingling/burning during the treatment, which only lasts a few minutes. Immediately after the peel, the skin may appear yellow for no more than 2-3 hours. Mild to moderate redness is expected and the extent varies from person to person. It usually resolves completely after the peeling is complete. Peeling may be as mild as flaking or as intense as peeling in sheets, depending on the individual and which peel is used.

Due to the increased acceleration of skin and cell turnover following a peel, results are expected to include a decrease in fine lines/wrinkles/large pores, smoothness of skin texture/collagen production, evening of skin tone, improved clarity of the skin, and improvement of acne conditions and acne scarring.

Noticeable results are expected after even one peel, with more dramatic results after 3-6 treatments.

It’s important to protect your new skin after the peel with an SPF 30 or higher and avoid sun exposure for one week post treatment.

Once the skin has stopped peeling, you can resume your normal skin care regimen. For the Vitalize and Rejuvenize peels, avoid any retin-A, salicylic/glycolic acids and Vitamin C during the peeling process. For the Perfect Peel, do not use these products for at least 3 weeks after the peel.

Chemical Peels in San Diego

Revitalized peel, before and after Juvederm treatment at Neu Look Med Spa and Skin Center

What is a Chemical Peel and How Does it Work?

A chemical peel is a skin treatment that rejuvenates the skin and an individual’s appearance by revealing vibrant and youthful skin.* A chemical peel works to remove the dead skin cells on the outermost layer of the skin, allowing the next layer of skin to replace the old layer. The old skin cells are removed by using a chemical solution, usually an acid of some kind, that creates a controlled wound in small areas of the skin. New skin will grow to replace the discarded skin, and this fresh layer of skin is healthier and fresher, resulting in tighter and more radiant skin.* A chemical peel also results in less visible wrinkles, blemishes, and fine lines.*

Types of Chemical Peels

Neu Look Med Spa and Skin Center offers three different types of chemical peels, giving patients a variety of options so they can find a treatment that best fits their needs. How to Heal Bruises From Injectables Quicker

At Neu Look Medical Spa in San Diego, CA, we understand the importance of privacy and the possibility that many of our patients do not share their cosmetic procedures with their peers. There are so many blood vessels that cannot be seen by the naked eye in the body, especially in the face and neck area. Unfortunately, many people fear getting treated because of…

Why You Should Be Using Latisse Instead of Lash-Boost

Neu Look's Eyelash Ideology When you first walk into Neu Look Medical Spa, you may notice one thing all of the personal at the practice have in common: long eyelashes. Gita (NP) and the staff believe in the effectiveness of and personally use all products we sell or offer at Neu Look Medical Spa. Latisse is one of the highest proscribed medications in the world. Because of that, a lot of companies have tried their best to create a generic formula that doesn’t need a Nurse Practitioner or Doctor’s signature to sell. If you are not familiar with the product, it is a clear solution that is only applied once daily to the upper lash line to promote longer, more…

Legality of Treatments Let’s face it, social media, and celebrities are making a huge impact on the upcoming generation of young adults. Young adults and teenagers are witnessing a whole new world of anti-wrinkle, lip and cheek injections becoming the new “norm”. Many individuals view cosmetic procedures as a way of self-expression. It is also to be noted that neither Botox nor any filler injection is permanent. However it is a medically prescribed treatment and should not be taken lightly. At Neu Look Med Spa & Skin Center, in San Diego, legally, you qualify for any treatment at the age 18 years of age, with a consultation.
