Plasma Rich Platelets (PRP)

Plasma Rich Platelets (PRP)

Plasma Rich Platelets (PRP) at Neu Look Skin in San Diego, CA

What is PRP?

PRP stands for Plasma Rich Platelets.

For the treatment, our NP Gita, will draw blood from the patient and put it in a centrifuge machine. Essentially the machine is spinning the blood in order to separate the platelets from the blood. These platelets can be used for injections or as a mask for recovery from laser treatments. Injections in the face can help break down acne scars. When you get multiple treatments it will help minimize them. And PRP injected in the scalp can help with hair growth. PRP has enriched proteins that stimulate hair growth, break down acne scars, and help with recovery time from other treatments, like Microneedling. Results will vary from patient to patient, and multiple treatments will maximize results.

When PRP is injected into the damaged area it causes a mild inflammation that triggers the healing cascade. As the platelets organize in the treatment area they release a number of enzymes to promote healing and tissue responses including attracting stem cells and growth factors to repair the damaged area. As a result new collagen begins to develop. As the collagen matures it begins to shrink causing the tightening and strengthening of the damaged area.
When treating injured or sun and time damaged tissue, they can induce a remodeling of the tissue to a healthier and younger state. The full procedure takes approximately 45 minutes to an hour. Generally 2-3 treatments are advised, however, more may be necessary for some individuals. Touch up treatments may be done once a year after the initial group of treatments to boost and maintain the results.

Pre and Post-Treatment for PRP Injections

PRE-TREATMENT INSTRUCTIONS:

A few simple guidelines before your treatment can make a difference.

DOs:
  • Discontinue use of anti-inflammatory drugs (steroidal and non-steroidal) such as: Aspirin, Motrin (or any other Ibuprofen drugs) at least 3 days to 1 week before your treatment.
  • With PRP, we “want” inflammation. This is one of the mechanisms of how PRP does work.
  • If you are or have been on Systemic use of Corticosteroids (steroids) within 2 weeks of treatment, we cannot treat you. Consult your physician for approval to discontinue use of steroids and receive treatment.
  • Discontinue use of any other blood thinning agents such as: Vitamin E, Vitamin A, Gingko Biloba, Garlic, Flax Oil, Cod Liver Oil, Essential Fatty Acids (EFA’s and DHA’s) etc. at least 3 days to 1 week before and after treatment to minimize bruising and bleeding.
  • Avoid: Alcohol, caffeine, Niacin supplement, spicy foods, and cigarettes 3 days before and after your treatment (All of these may increase risk of bruising).
DON’Ts:
  • If you develop a fever, cold, flu, or develop a cold sore, blemish, or rash, etc. in the area to be treated prior to your appointment, you must reschedule (we will not treat you).
  • It is recommended, if you have a special event or vacation coming up that you schedule your treatment at least 2 weeks in advance (we prefer 3-4).
  • If you are being treated in the lip area and have a history of Herpes (cold sores) with outbreaks more than 4 times a year some practitioners recommended that you are pretreated with medication.
  • We recommend Valtrex 500 mg twice a day, starting the day before and continue for 5 days.

POST TREATMENT INSTRUCTIONS:

Please carefully read and follow these Instructions after your PRP treatment. There are minimal restrictions after your PRP injections allowing you to return to your daily activities almost immediately. It is normal to experience: Bruising, Redness, Itching, Soreness, and Swelling that may last from 3-10 days following your procedure.

DOs:
  • If you experience discomfort or pain you may take Tylenol or other Acetaminophen products.
  • Maintain a healthy diet and drink at least 64 ounces of water the day of the treatment. Continue water intake the first week after.
DON’Ts:
  • Do NOT touch, press, rub, or manipulate the treated area (s) for at least 8 hours after your treatment AVOID Aspirin, Motrin, Ibuprofen, Aleve (all non-steroidal a n d steroidal anti -inflammatory agents), Gingko Biloba, Garlic, Flax Oil, Cod liver Oil, Vitamin A, Vitamin E, or any other essential fatty acids at least 3 days – 1week prior to and after your treatment.
  • Do not wash or take a shower for at least 8 hours after your treatment.

PRP Microneedling

PRP Microneedling San Diego with Gita Izadi at Neu Look Med Spa and Skin Center in San Diego, CA

Prior to getting this treatment I had no idea what I was in for. But I can honestly say this is my favorite way to get Microneedling. PRP stands for platelet-rich-plasma. So, rather than using the Microneedling gel for the treatment, the provider will use your plasma. The way that this works is with a centrifuge machine, that essentially spins your blood and separates your plasma from the blood. The benefits of using PRP rather than Microneedling gel is the healing process and injections. PRP speeds up the healing process of Microneedling. Therefore, rather than being red for 5-7 days it should really only last 3-5 days. This makes the treatment more convenient and obtainable because you don’t have to worry about the healing process. Plus, you can use a mineral-based powder, like Jane Iredale, the day after your treatment to cover up the redness. We recommend Jane Iredale because we know it is safe for your skin, and with my experience it has really good coverage! By the second and third day you couldn’t see any redness which was convenient because I had errands to run.

How Microneedling Works

The step by step of how the PRP Microneedling treatment works is getting numbed an hour prior to your treatment, to lessen the pain of the treatment. For me, when my face is numb, the Microneedling feels like a massage and I really enjoy it. The first step in the actual PRP treatment is drawing some of your blood. Then the provider will put the tube in a centrifuge machine which will spin the blood to obtain the PRP. When you look at the tube you will be able to see the separation. Platelets will range in color from yellow to orange. Prior to the PRP treatment, I looked up a video to see what it was like and their patient’s platelets were yellow. When I was getting my treatment done, and my platelets were orange I was a little concerned. But this is nothing to worry about. After the PRP is prepared, the provider will place the PRP onto your skin and proceed with the Microneedling treatment. You can even get injections of the PRP into your acne scars or indentations in your skin. If you have ever gotten a Microneedling treatment then you know how much of a difference it makes to the surface of your skin. Then adding the component of PRP improves the cell turnover because the provider is using a component of your body. So, not only does the PRP ease the healing process it will actually create improved results.

Microneedling: Post Treatment

Post treatment, the texture of my skin has dramatically changed. The day of the treatment I was extremely red but honestly by the second day it reduced by 50%. Compared to the last time I got Microneedling, without the PRP, I’d say the healing process was way faster and more convenient. I didn’t have to worry about not going outside or looking strange. The day after I was able to apply my Jane Iredale foundation and go out in public and no one could tell I got anything. After the third and fourth day I didn’t even apply foundation because it look like a very faint sunburn. Gita saw me the next week and was absolutely astonished with my skin. She touched it and said it felt like a baby’s skin. The appearance of my acne scars also improved but like she told me prior to the treatment, nothing will truly make them go away. But I can’t wait to do another PRP treatment to soften my acne scars and resurface my skin again! I would recommend it to everyone and anyone!
