What You Need to Know About Lip Augmentation

Lip Injections

Lip augmentation is a cosmetic procedure that can give you fuller, plumper lips. These days, an injectable dermal filler is the most common method of lip augmentation. There are many types of dermal fillers that can be injected in your lips and around your mouth. But the most common fillers today are products that contain a hyaluronic acid base. Hyaluronic acid is a natural substance found in the body. It helps increase volume in your lips. These types of dermal fillers have been given the name “hyaluronic acid fillers”. This will eventually lead to natural collagen growth.

Injectable Hyaluronic Acid

Injectable hyaluronic acid is a type of temporary dermal filler. Injectable hyaluronic acid is used to reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, facial folds, and to create structure, framework, and volume to the face and lips. Hyaluronic acid is found naturally throughout the body and grows naturally throughout the skin, with the highest concentration in the joints, eyes, and skin. In the skin, hyaluronic attracts water, which allows the skin to become more hydrated. The effects of injectable hyaluronic acid are seen immediately.
Have a consultation with your practitioner and ask to see the before and after pictures of their patients. Some Medical Spas will even show a video of them performing the treatment on someone so you can see the results and procedure. It’s very reassuring to see. Even more reassuring is, if you’re unhappy with the results, your practitioner is able to dissolve the Hyaluronic acid filler instantly with another injection, which is called Hyaluronidase. Make sure you see the product you’re being injected with too. During your treatment the product should be taken directly from the box, and not previously diluted. Everything should be transparent. You should be able to see exactly what is going on and what is being used.

Fillers like Juvederm, Belotero, Radiesse and Voluma

Fillers, including Juvederm, Belotero, Radiesse and Voluma also use a very small needle. However, for fillers, more fluid is usually injected under the skin’s surface. For this reason, fillers come with Lidocaine which helps numb the injection site. Your practitioner can also use a topical numbing cream and/or ice to further reduce the likelihood of pain and swelling. Some practitioners might recommend you take arnica or apply it, topically, to help reduce swelling after a dermal filler treatment. Applying ice is a well-known treatment to reduce swelling after injuries, and the same effect can be seen when you apply ice to the treated area after a dermal filler treatment. Another way to avoid swelling and bruising is to stay away from alcohol and anti-inflammatory medication prior to your treatment.

What To Expect After Lip Filler Treatment

Swelling after lip filler treatment is completely normal and therefore the size of your lips immediately after treatment is not a true reflection of the final result. Minor swelling can last between a few hours to days, or possibly longer, depending on multiple factors. Tips to lessen the time of dwelling is to apply ice to the treated area, stay hydrated, focus on eating healthy foods like fresh fruits & vegetables. The vitamins and minerals, from the fruits and vegetables, will assist with the healing process. Avoiding strenuous exercise and extreme hot temperatures for 24-48 hours post treatment will also help. Things to avoid include processed foods, fast foods. heavy activity or exercise for the first two days after treatment, excess salt (it is dehydrating), spicy foods, blood-thinning medications, including aspirin and ibuprofen (unless prescribed by your medical practitioner), smoking and exposure to smoke.

Unnatural Lips

Duck Lips…?

A couple years ago one of the biggest trends was getting huge lips, duck lips as some would call them, because of celebrities like Kylie Jenner. But now the natural look is becoming a trend again, which means there’s a lot of providers are doing lip correction procedures. It has become a more popular treatment of our facility as well. One of the biggest sayings in our spa is quality over quantity. Whether that is only doing natural styled lips with our injections, to the product that we use in the lip. A lot of the time patients who come in for lip correction have gone to facilities who do the procedure at a lower cost, are in a different country, or to providers who are not as experienced as our Nurse Practitioner, Gita. That is why we stress the experience and skill that Gita has, to all our patients who come in and ensure the high quality of the experience we provide.

Quality Over Quantity

I understand that everyone has a budget when it comes to aesthetics and cannot spend an unlimited amount of money for their fillers and lips. I completely understand that however quality over quantity once again. Your lips are one of the center points of your face and so it is imperative you go to someone who knows what they are doing. Make sure that your provider is familiar with the different lip filler products and knows which one is best for lips. On Instagram I see a lot of influencers and everyday people that get lip fillers and a popular one I have seen is Juvederm Voluma for the lip. But, as our NP Gita has stated, that product is a bit too thick for the lip area and can result in overly big lips as well as bumpy lips.

Personalized Treatments at Neu Look

When her patients come in and are unhappy with their lips, Gita always asks what their concern is with them. It ranges anywhere from their lips feel bumpy or they’re lopsided or they felt as though there wasn’t enough or too much product. The first thing that Gita always reminds our patients is that everyone is asymmetrical and so there will always be one side of your lip that differs from the other. But providers should be able to identify that and correct it rather than inject in a way that makes it more prevalent. When it comes to hyaluronic acid based fillers like Juvederm and Restylane, there is a product by the name of hyaluronidase that can melt the product. This is ideal when providers inject too much product in one area or if the lips end up bumpy. It just melts the product and you will be left with your natural lip. Once all the product is melted, you will be able to get injectables seven days after. Then Gita will be able to use the proper lip filler and inject it in a way to achieve the patient’s desires.

The Differences Between Juvederm Fillers

A common question that we at Neu Look Med Spa in North County get asked is “Which filler is right for me?”

With so many injectables out in the market, it can be extremely confusing to know which is best for you. That’s why it is so crucial to go to an experienced practitioner who has a broad knowledge of the differences between fillers.

For example, one of the most requested services is lip injections. Patients have many options when it comes to choosing a lip filler. An example is Allergan, the creator of Botox and Juvederm lip injection products, who offers a variety of injectables such as:

  • Juvederm Ultra XC
  • Juvederm  Volbella which is specifically for the lines above the lip
  • Juvederm Ultra Plus XC can be used to plump the lips.

Also, Galderma, the creator of Restylane, has a variety of injectables for the lip area. Examples are:

  • Restylane Silk for lips,  this product is FDA approved for the lip area.
  • Restylane
  • Restylane Refyne

Juvederm Volbella

If you’re looking to add more subtle volume and soften the vertical lip lines, Volbella will be an excellent choice. It comes in 0.50 CC verses 1 full syringe, making it a perfect injectable for the vertical lines above the lips.

An important thing to know about these vertical lines is that many times, they are caused by genetics. Many of our customers are disappointed that they have those lines and and believe the main reason for them is smoking, but that may not always be the case.

It is important to take care of these lines as soon as they appear on your skin, as the deeper they get, the harder it is to erase them.

Juvederm Ultra XC

This product has been used for many years. It has a better effect for plumping lips and can be used for the lines above the lip area as well. It provides a more robust and full lip appearance and lasts for up to 1 year.

This product is FDA approved and creates plumper lips. Patients have to be informed that this product will absorb water and has a higher chance of puffiness.

It is important for patients to realize that there may be bruising and swelling after lip Injections. We suggest doing this treatment at least 2 weeks before any important social event to allow time for healing.

How can I prevent the duck lips or fake lips?

Most people are intimidated by injectables. They look at the people who have received filler and are scared to look unnatural. Gita Izadi NP, consults with first time patients and explains that the actual filler is not the reason for the unnatural appearance, but rather the misplacement of filler by an inexperienced injector. All of the fillers mentioned in this page are Hylouronic Acid based and can easily be dissolved.

Another factor for looking natural is to use the right amount of product. For example, if someone has a very thin lip, they should be injected very lightly, especially on the upper lip to prevent fake looking lips.

How much of the filler is too much?

Most fillers come in a one CC syringes and have .1-.2 cc lidocaine added to them to reduce the discomfort of injection. 1 CC is equal to a quarter of a teaspoon. Gita Izadi believes that everyone can handle a quarter of teaspoon in their lips without being overdone.

Is the lip injection permanent?

The HA products are not permanent, and can last from 6 months up to 1 year. Patients who are more expressive with their lips will notice that it may last a shorter time. The more layers of filler in the lips, the longer it will last.

Gita Izadi has been correcting many poorly done lip augmentations that have been done at other offices. Please consult with us if you have had your lips done and are not happy with them. We can dissolve the previous injection, give you a one week break, then inject you once more to give you the lips you desire.

How much is the lip injection?

At Neu Look Med Spa all of our regular prices are listed on our website, and we run promotions all the time.  Give us a call at (858) 538-5665 for more information!

At Neu Look Med Spa we provide almost all the injectables available in the aesthetic market. Our loyalty is toward our patients, not the companies. In the last 15 years, we have been able to use the best products according to the need of our patients.

Injectables are created uniquely for placement in different parts of the face. While you may need a very delicate injectable for fine lines, you will need a more robust injectable for areas of major volume loss on the face. Gita Izadi, our Nurse Practitioner, has over 15 years of experience with a variety of fillers. We invite you to come for a FREE consultation to let her share her knowledge and artistic eye with you today.
