With so many injectables out in the market, it can be extremely confusing to know which is best for you. That’s why it is so crucial to go to an experienced practitioner who has a broad knowledge of the differences between fillers.
For example, one of the most requested services is lip injections. Patients have many options when it comes to choosing a lip filler. An example is Allergan, the creator of Botox and Juvederm lip injection products, who offers a variety of injectables such as:
- Juvederm Ultra XC
- Juvederm Volbella which is specifically for the lines above the lip
- Juvederm Ultra Plus XC can be used to plump the lips.
Also, Galderma, the creator of Restylane, has a variety of injectables for the lip area. Examples are:
- Restylane Silk for lips, this product is FDA approved for the lip area.

Juvederm Volbella
If you’re looking to add more subtle volume and soften the vertical lip lines, Volbella will be an excellent choice. It comes in 0.50 CC verses 1 full syringe, making it a perfect injectable for the vertical lines above the lips.
An important thing to know about these vertical lines is that many times, they are caused by genetics. Many of our customers are disappointed that they have those lines and and believe the main reason for them is smoking, but that may not always be the case.

Juvederm Ultra XC
This product has been used for many years. It has a better effect for plumping lips and can be used for the lines above the lip area as well. It provides a more robust and full lip appearance and lasts for up to 1 year.
RESTYLANE SILK
This product is FDA approved and creates plumper lips. Patients have to be informed that this product will absorb water and has a higher chance of puffiness.
It is important for patients to realize that there may be bruising and swelling after lip Injections. We suggest doing this treatment at least 2 weeks before any important social event to allow time for healing.

How can I prevent the duck lips or fake lips?
Most people are intimidated by injectables. They look at the people who have received filler and are scared to look unnatural. Gita Izadi NP, consults with first time patients and explains that the actual filler is not the reason for the unnatural appearance, but rather the misplacement of filler by an inexperienced injector. All of the fillers mentioned in this page are Hylouronic Acid based and can easily be dissolved.
Another factor for looking natural is to use the right amount of product. For example, if someone has a very thin lip, they should be injected very lightly, especially on the upper lip to prevent fake looking lips.
How much of the filler is too much?
Most fillers come in a one CC syringes and have .1-.2 cc lidocaine added to them to reduce the discomfort of injection. 1 CC is equal to a quarter of a teaspoon. Gita Izadi believes that everyone can handle a quarter of teaspoon in their lips without being overdone.
Is the lip injection permanent?
The HA products are not permanent, and can last from 6 months up to 1 year. Patients who are more expressive with their lips will notice that it may last a shorter time. The more layers of filler in the lips, the longer it will last.
