Lip Injections

Lip augmentation is a cosmetic procedure that can give you fuller, plumper lips. These days, an injectable dermal filler is the most common method of lip augmentation. There are many types of dermal fillers that can be injected in your lips and around your mouth. But the most common fillers today are products that contain a hyaluronic acid base. Hyaluronic acid is a natural substance found in the body. It helps increase volume in your lips. These types of dermal fillers have been given the name “hyaluronic acid fillers”. This will eventually lead to natural collagen growth.

Injectable Hyaluronic Acid

Injectable hyaluronic acid is a type of temporary dermal filler. Injectable hyaluronic acid is used to reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, facial folds, and to create structure, framework, and volume to the face and lips. Hyaluronic acid is found naturally throughout the body and grows naturally throughout the skin, with the highest concentration in the joints, eyes, and skin. In the skin, hyaluronic attracts water, which allows the skin to become more hydrated. The effects of injectable hyaluronic acid are seen immediately.
Have a consultation with your practitioner and ask to see the before and after pictures of their patients. Some Medical Spas will even show a video of them performing the treatment on someone so you can see the results and procedure. It’s very reassuring to see. Even more reassuring is, if you’re unhappy with the results, your practitioner is able to dissolve the Hyaluronic acid filler instantly with another injection, which is called Hyaluronidase. Make sure you see the product you’re being injected with too. During your treatment the product should be taken directly from the box, and not previously diluted. Everything should be transparent. You should be able to see exactly what is going on and what is being used.

Fillers like Juvederm, Belotero, Radiesse and Voluma

Fillers, including Juvederm, Belotero, Radiesse and Voluma also use a very small needle. However, for fillers, more fluid is usually injected under the skin’s surface. For this reason, fillers come with Lidocaine which helps numb the injection site. Your practitioner can also use a topical numbing cream and/or ice to further reduce the likelihood of pain and swelling. Some practitioners might recommend you take arnica or apply it, topically, to help reduce swelling after a dermal filler treatment. Applying ice is a well-known treatment to reduce swelling after injuries, and the same effect can be seen when you apply ice to the treated area after a dermal filler treatment. Another way to avoid swelling and bruising is to stay away from alcohol and anti-inflammatory medication prior to your treatment.

What To Expect After Lip Filler Treatment

Swelling after lip filler treatment is completely normal and therefore the size of your lips immediately after treatment is not a true reflection of the final result. Minor swelling can last between a few hours to days, or possibly longer, depending on multiple factors. Tips to lessen the time of dwelling is to apply ice to the treated area, stay hydrated, focus on eating healthy foods like fresh fruits & vegetables. The vitamins and minerals, from the fruits and vegetables, will assist with the healing process. Avoiding strenuous exercise and extreme hot temperatures for 24-48 hours post treatment will also help. Things to avoid include processed foods, fast foods. heavy activity or exercise for the first two days after treatment, excess salt (it is dehydrating), spicy foods, blood-thinning medications, including aspirin and ibuprofen (unless prescribed by your medical practitioner), smoking and exposure to smoke.
